Johel Coutura : The Bordeaux Museum. The Bordeaux Museum, based on the one created by Court de Gébelin in Paris, was the most striking example of the way the Masons came out into the open on the eve of the French Revolution. Its founder, abbé Dupont des Jumeaux, placed the new institution under the protection of Marie — Antoinette. Its activities were recorded in a Recueil dedicated to the Queen and in the first Bordeaux daily newspaper, the Journal de Guyenne. With its public meetings, free classes (in languages, geometry, literature, painting, etc.), exhibitions of engravings and paintings, the Bordeaux Museum contributed to a great extent to the intellectual development of this important provincial town in the late 18th Century.Coutura Johel. Johel Coutura : The activities of a Bordeaux masonic lodge (1780-82). The acquisition by the Grand Orient de France library of the registers of one of the numerous Bordeaux lodges, L'Étoile Flamboyante aux Trois Lys, gives us a rare chance to study the everyday workings of a lodge, despite covering only three years. This small lodge of about twenty members, mainly traders, suffered from their frequent absences and serious financial difficulties. The registers give information about the running of the lodge, the organisation of banquets, the rites used, the officers and ceremonial. Unfortunately the details of the accounts are not known, nor is the work in the meetings, which would have shown how far they were influenced by new ideas. We do however find quite a large number of visitors, including several foreigners.Coutura Johel. L'activité d'une loge de Bordeaux entre 1780 et 1782. In: Dix-huitième Siècle, n°21, 1989.
